INLAND WATERWAYS COMMISSION.
INQUIRIES EARLY IN MARCH. NAVIGATION OF WAIKATO RIVER In 1914, the Government appointed an Auckland Canals and Inland Waterways Commission, but this w r as dissolved owing to the war, when its investigations had proceeded only a short distance. A similar commission, consisting of Messrs. William Ferguson, civil engineer of Wellington (chairman), James Begg, farmer, of Dunedin, and Ashley Hunter, civil engineer, of Auckland, has been set up and will commence its inquiries early in March and report as to the establishment of a system of canals and inlancL waterways and otherwise improving the means of transpoprt in the Auckland district and with special reference to other matters. There are 14 references on the order paper, including the navigation of the Waikato river and its tributaries, the effect on such rivers and on the adjacent swamp lands of the improvement works proposed or already executed by the Waikato River Board, and generally as to the navigation of those rivers .
