NO AVAILABLE ROLLING STOCK.
ORDERS FOR SCORIA HELD UP. MINISTER INTERVIEWED. Metal in 'some parts of the Franklin County is absolutely unprocurable and in spite of the Council’s endeavours to obtain supplies of scoria from outside sources in order to make the county roads passable, it appears that all their efforts have been frustrated by the action of the Railway Department which, on account of the shortage of rolling stock, cannot guarantee the supply of orders for scoria At Wednesday night’s meeting of the Council, in reply to the engineeer (Mr. F. J. McArthur), the district engineer, New Zealand railways, regretted that he was unablel to guarantee a supply of rolling stock for orders for scoria, and pointed out it would not be convenient for the work train to do the necessary work. -—lt was decided to place the position before the Minister of Railways, with a request -that he use his best endeavours on behalf of the county. It was decided to point out that the Council could not metal the approaches to Paerata-Waiuku branch railway, as the Council could not obtain a supply of scoria.
