NEURO SURGEON

OTAGO GRADUATE APPOINTED It was announced by the chairman of the Otago Hospital Board (Mr J. >W. Dove), last night that Major Murray A. Falconer, R.A.M.C., has been appointed to a, position as neuro-surgeon attached to the Otago Medical School and the Dunedin Hospital. The appointment was made possible by a grant from the Government, Sir Dove said, and under the conditions of the appointment Major Falconer’s services would be made available in other centres as required. Major Falconer, who is at present serving as a neuro-surgical specialist to the St. Hugh’s Military Hospital for head injuries to members of the Army and Air Force, holds the degrees of F.R.C.S. (England) and M.Ch. (New Zealand). He was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, and graduated at the .University of Otago in 1934. He then went to England, where he became assistant to Professor Turnbull in the Bernard Baron Research Institute of the London Hospital. He subsequently held positions as house physician to Lord Border at the British Post-graduate Hospital and surgical registrar at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and he also studied in France and Germany.

Major Falconer was an Award Fellow at the Mayo Clinic, United States of America, the nomination for this honour coming from the British Medical Research Council, in asso. elation with which he had carried out research work. He was the first student to be nominated by the Dominion Universities of Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand for a Nuffield fellowship at Oxford University, where, under Brigadier Hugh Cairns, he specialised in neuro-surgery for three years in the Nuffield department of surgery. ■ Major Falconer, who is a son of Dr A. R. Falconer, of Dunedin, married Miss Valda Turley, of Hawke’s Bay, in 1939.
