RACING
[By St. Clair.]
Answer to Correspondent. “ Inquisitive.”—Royal Lancer was handicapped at 8.4, Hearth 7.12, Doubleack 7.10, and Boloyna 7.10 in the last New Zealand Cup, but none was accepted for. News and Views. Nominations for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on October 31, close on Thursday at 5 p.m. Nominations for the New Zealand Cup, to be run on November 28, close next Friday at S p.m. Doria is amiss again, and it is probable that she will be retired to the stud. Town Hall, who is an overgrown colt, is to be given time to develop, and the next time he races it will likely be as a gelding. Marquee will make his debut in open company at Gore next week under favourable conditions, having been handicapped on the minimum (7.0). With the Oamaru trotting meeting closely following on, keen interest will be taken in the two light harness events to be decided at Washdyke next Saturday, as a number of the horses are engaged at both fixtures. Two of the Dunedin Guineas candidates, Foxbavcn and Lord Advocate, have been engaged in handicaps at the South Canterbury meeting. The former has 9.1 in the mile and 35yds hack race, and Lord Advocate is in at 7.0 in the Teschemaker Handicap, mile and a-quarter. A Press Association cable from Sydney states that unless the withdrawals from the Toorak and the Herbert Power Handicaps, to be run next Saturday, are numerous, it is a possibility that tne hurdle race on the programme may be deleted in order to keep the programme within the required limit of events. Norse was making his first appearance in public over hurdles last Saturday, and shaped well. He should be much improved by the experience, and is likely to show up in the hurdle race at Washdyke next Saturday, in which he has been weighted at 9.2. Totalisator betting was unusually heavy at the four meetings held last Saturday, £224,960 being invested. At Auckland the increase was £27,462, New Brighton trots £22,235, Dunedin £15,755, and Otaki £lO,332|, a total of £75,784 10s—an increase of over 50 per cent, on the turnover at these meetings last year. Quite a number of Wingatui-trained horses have been engaged at both the South Canterbury and Gore meetings this month, including Lady Don, Courtdress, Forte, Jacksonville, Tring, Boloyna, The Joker, Taxpayer, Lady Nuffield, Damascus, and Lord Nuffield. Southern Sail, now trained at Washdyke, is also engaged at both meetings. Royal Lancer’s success in the Ranfurly Handicap on Saturday brought his total stake winnings to £3,115. Though now well up in the handicaps, Royal Lancer has only to keep sound to win more money, as he is one of the best weight carriers racing in the South Island at present. Lord Nuffield has been set to give Bashful Lady 101 b in the Stewards’ Handicap at Gore, but all going well in the meantime, the Slraightcourse gelding is likely to go to Wellington. Bashful Lady is estimated at 41b better than Secret Flight, and a meeting between these two good mares will bo watched with interest. ' Blissful Lady, top-weight with 9.3 in the Waimea Hack Handicap at the Gore meeting, is i full-sister, a year older, to Bashful Lady, but she has not won a race since she scored under 8.9 from Merry Simon 8.5 and Cherokee 8.1 over a mile at the Winton meeting in February, 1940. It looks - as if she has been handicapped more on account of her breeding than recent performances. In the Teschemaker Handicap, to be run on Saturday, Boloyna, Southern Sail, and The Joker have been allotted the same weight as they carried in the Ranfurly Handicap, but Atreus has been raised 71b for running second, and The Raker 21b for his third. The field appears to be a stronger one than last Saturday, the newcomers including Don’t Forget, Wardress, Eulogist, All Night, and Stabilize, all winners this season. A Sydney cable states that his trainer, J. Fryer, was exceptionally well pleased with Skipton’s win on Saturday, and said that his tendency to go off his feed following a hard race was not in evidence now. H. Badger, rider of Wilson, was very disappointed in that horse’s effort, and intends seeking permission to cancel his riding engagement on that horse in order to accept the mount on David Innis in the Caulfield Cup. Sing Sing, who had not had a race since the Winton meeting last February, finished very fast in the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday, and, better placed in the middle stages of the race, might have troubled St. Cloud. She has been nicely handicapped at 7.8 in the open sprint at the Gore meeting, and should be considerably better for last week’s run. Sing Sing is also engaged in the mile and a-quarter race, in which she has to give Marquee 31b. ■ After his convincing win at the Geraldine meeting All Night looked to be a sitting shot for the short race at Wingatui, but though well enough placed over the early stages, he was well beaten shortly after turning for home. This was not All Night’s true form, and his trainer may have been a little easy on him in the interval between the two fixtures. Next. Saturday All Night is engaged in the Teschemaker Handicap, mile and a-quarter, with 8.2. All Night has yet to prove himself a stayer, but on his breeding should be able to master the distance. During the 194142 racing season, ended July 31, there were 214 dfiys of racing and trotting, as compared with 308 the previous season and 319 in the 1939-40 season. The totalisator investments in 1941-42 were £7,224,203, as compared with £8,769,917 (1940-41), £8,139,914 (1939-40), £7,981,422 (1938-39), and £7,201,820 (193738). Considering the 194142 season in comparison with previous years, the amount of the totalisator investments showed a reduction of 17.6 per cent., as compared with a reduction of 30.5 per cent, in the number of days of racing. Direct taxation on racing and trotting amounted to £682,146, as compared with £828,411 the previous season. Gore Handicaps.
