SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
(Own Correspondent.) Personal.—Mr T. Liken, who for the past 14 years has been on the locomotive staff at Balclutha railway station, and who has been transferred to Picton, was on Saturday night entertained by his colleagues and presented with an electric reading lamp and an electric iron. Mr R. Buckley, who presided, made the presentation.—Aircraftman Percy Shand was, on the eve of his marriage, Friday night, the recipient of a cocktail tray from members of the Clutha Football Club, of which he has been an active member both as a player and on the administrative side of club'affairs. Bowling.—Balclutha Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday. There was a large attendance, including visitors from Kaitangata and Stirling. The mayor, Mr J. Copland, declared the season open, and Mrs L. Cockerill, wife of the vice-president, threw the “ kitty,” and Mrs Jae. Gold, wife of the president, rolled the first bowl. The ladies dispensed afternoon tea, and representatives of visiting clubs extended best wishes for the coming season. Milton club also opened on Saturday, and Kaitangata will open this week-end. Ball. —The nurses of Balclutha Hospital,' in conjunction with the officers of an adjacent camp,, held a very successful ball at Balclutha on >Thursday night, in an effort to raise- funds for camp amenities. There was a very large attendance, the camp orchestra .provided the music, and as a result a substantial sum was raised. Golf.—ln the final knock-out competition of the Balclutha club, played on Saturday, L. J. Edwards beat 6. Ashcroft 3 and 1. The club closes the season on Saturday. Plunkot Society.—Mrs Jno. Gray presided over the annual meeting of Milton branch last week. . The finances were in a sound position, being helped by a legacy of £2OO from the, estate of Peter Williamson. The resignation of Mesdames N. T. Mirams as treasurer, J. G. Leckie as secretary, and F.' Read as member were accepted with regret, and appreciation expressed of their services. Mrs Gray was re-elected president, Mesdames I. C. Vidal and Mframs vice-presidents, Mrs Jas. Murray secretary and treasurer. Mrs Leckie was elected to the committee.
