RUGBY FOOTBALL
COMPETITIONS TO CLOSE Mr Ira Grant presided over the fortnightly meeting of tho Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union last night. The meeting opened with a lengthy discussion on the question whether the various competitions should be carried on any further, or whether some, or all, should be closed and other matches arranged. It was stated that certain senior teams had expressed their desire to finish, while most of the juniors had up to date fulfilled their engagements. After various suggestions had been put forward with a view to solving the problem, it was decided that matches in all grades be played as arranged next Saturday, and that the competitions be then closed. On the following Saturday a seven-a-side tournament for three grades will be played—first grade, second and third grades combined, and fourth and fifth grades combined. In regard to the match between Army and Artillery, which was set down for earlier in the season, but was postponed because neither side could put a team in (iio field that day, it was decided to inform these chibs that they were not compelled to play the match off if they did not; desire to do so. ASSOCIATION CODE' Mr F.. L. Hope presided at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Football Association last night. It was reported that a Boys’ Brigade team from Invercargill would travel to Dunedin on Saturday to meet a team ftom the Otago Boys’ High School. The match would be played at Littlebourno. A protest was received from the Air Force team in connection with a recent match against Northern. It was decided that the protest be upheld and the match awarded to Air Force. The intermediate competition was declared closed, and congratulations were extended to Air Force, the winners in this grade. It was decided that the play-off between Maori Hill and 0.8.H.5. for fourth grade honours should take place on September 19 at the Oval, and that a match for Army A should be arranged for the same day. It was also decided to send a letter to Army A congratulating it on its win against the Oamaru Army team at Oamaru last Saturday. A letter was received from the Council of the Dunedin Scottish Societies thanking the association for granting the use of its equipment to teams from overseas ships. The following is the draw for Saturday:— First Grade.—Army A v. Caversham, at Tonga Park, at 3 p.ra. (Mr J. Welsh). Fourth Grade. —Boys’ Brigade (Invercargill) v. 0.8.H.5., at Littlebourne, at 2 p.m. (Mr D. Hanlin). Fifth Grade.—Mornington v. Northern, at Gardens, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr J. Webster); Mosgiel a bye.
