PORT ROAD RACE

LEITH CLUB SUCCESSES C. LUCAS THE WINNER C. Lucas, of the Leith Harrier Club, was the winner of the annual Port Chalmers to Dunedin rpad race held on Saturday under ideal conditions, the day being warm and a light following wind assisting the runners. Another Leith Club man, D. Fincham, was the second runner home, and the club also won the tennis’ race. Seventeen competitors took part in the race, which started on the main road at the Mussel Bay station and followed the road through Sawyers Bay, _St. Leonards, and Ravensbourne to the finishing post at the University Oval at Logan Park. R. J. McAusland was the first, man to leave, followed at close intervals by R. Rigby, R. Dawson, R. Watson, J. Halets, B. McManus, A. G. Hebbard, R. M. Carroll, J. O. Milburu, L. R. McMillan, W. Spain, C. Lucas, D. Fiuchani, M. Mackinnon, R. Rubber, and L. E. Fox, with the scratch man, G. L. Austin, leaving nearly seven minutes after the limit man. McAusland had a lead of 400 yards at Sawyers Buy, with Halcis, Dawson, Watson, and Lucas next. Lucas was going well, and had already passed several of the men who had left before him. At St. Leonards, McAusland was 150 yards ahead of Lucas who was a similar distance in front of Dawson ■ and Halcis, who were followed by Watson, Carroll, Hebbard, Fincham, Rigby, Mackinnon, and Rubber. Fincham and Hiibbcr were coming through the field at this stage. Passing through Burkes, Lucas had gone to the front, and led McAusland by 300yds, Fincham being in third place, followed by Mackinnon and Rubber, and the scratch man (Austin) being more than three minutes behind the leader. At Ravensbourne Lucas was well clear of the field. , ]and had dropped back into the middle of the field. Fincham and Rubber were together, with Mackinnon and Austin following at long intervals. Lucas came into the University Oval about 200yds ahead of Fincham, who beat Rubber in the last half-mile. The time was 47min 32 3-sscc. Tho race was controlled by the officials of the Otago Centre of (lie New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, with Mr C. W. Clark (president) and Mr C. A. Pope (secretary) in charge.
