At, Hie monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough C'onnril it was reported (hat. the application from the Society for Closer Relations With Russia to screen a Russian film in (he hall had been granted, provided that the screening took place on a. Tuesday evening. The society would have to hire IHo services of the council’s operator, and use the operating box. The mayor (Mr G. A. Orange) was in the chair, and those present were; Crs J. Boomer, L. M. CJ. Burgess, ,T. A. Gallery, T. L. Mason, T. M. McAhan, R. B. Rennie, T. Robson, and W. B. Wynn. The Town Clerk reported that the amount of current rates collected up to August 21, the last day on which to secure the rebate, was £5,793 7s 3d. The total rates would amount to £10,319 16s 2d, and the rebate to £136 13s 3d. For the same period last year £4,865 19s 4d had been collected out of a total of £9,165 17s 4d, and the rebate allowed was £l2O 10s 4d. The position this year, the clerk added, was satisfactory, the figures showing a substantial increase on those for last year. The payment of rates on Government houses in time to got the benefit of the rebate .bad considerably improved (lie position. An application from tlio Otago Iron Rolling Mills Company Ltd. for permission to lay a light railway track across Duddingston street was mentioned in the report of the Public Works Committee. Permission had been granted. It had also been decided to construct a low concrete wall and channel in Upper Kirkland street, and a kerb and channel for the footpath in Exmouth street, between ‘Alexander street and Teigumouth street. • It was decided to make a grant of £2 to the funds of the Green Island Boy Scouts.
