FURTHER G&UNCIL DISCUSSION. The question of building concrete pipe air raid shelters in the borough again came up for discussion at Monday night’s meeting of (he St. Hilda Borough Council, when Cr G. Glue presented a report on- the cost of construction. He stated that the four sots of pipes contemplated by the*council would cost £BO a set, 24ft in length, that sum including cradling, seating,_ and blast walls. The borough’s contribution to the total cost would be 25 per cent.,, the balance being paid by the Government. The mayor, Mr N. D. Anderson, who presided. stated that the shelters were only for those people caught in the streets in any raid Cr If. Longworth said that to consider constructing four shelters was only tinkering witli the question. They would not be anywhere near enough, and at least 20 would he needed lo afford protection throughout (he borough. " The city engineer has said Unit four shelters will be enough for the borough,” said Cr Glue. I assure you that you will be informed. immediately a decision is reached.” —Received. MUD TANKS. The secretary of the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board, Mr R.. A. Johnston, wrote advising that the drainage engineer had been authorised to build additional mud tanks in Koval Crescent and at the intersection of Forhury Crescent and Albert street, and these would- be connected with the stormwater sewers already installed— Received. Grant to assist him in meeting expenses incurred in his district letter writing scheme. On Cr Longworth’s motion it was agreed to send a letter from the council expressing appreciation of his work.
