DEATH OF DUKE OF KENT

QUEEN MOTHER’S MESSAGE (P.A.) WELLINGTON August 31. : The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, has received the following telegram from Queen Mary in reply to a message of sympathy in the death of the Duke of” Kent, which was despatched to Her Majesty Sincerest thanks for your most kind message on behalf of the Government and peoples of New Zealand.” LOCAL BODIES’ SYMPATHY. Prior to the opening of the business at the City Council last night, the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) referred to the death on active service of H.iR.H. the Duke of Kent. “I am sure wo all feel deeply for the Duchess of Kent aud her family, and also for the King and Queen and the members of the Royal Family,” Mr Allen said. “We all know of the loyalty aud devotion of the Duke to the Empire, in the service of which ho lost his life. It would be fitting for the council to place on record a suitable resolution, which should be forwarded to the Governor-General.” Members signified their approval of the suggestion by standing in silence. ' At last night’s meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council the mayor, Mr N. D. Anderson, made reference to the untimely death of the Duke. He moved that, in common with other local bodies in the Dominion, the council place on record its-profound sympathy with the Royal Family. The motion was carried members standing in silence.
