OBITUARY

HR S. B. CARPENTER The death of Mr Surrey Beauford Carpenter, which occurred on Thursday of last week, removed, at the age of 84 years, a well-known and highly-es-teemed resident of Musselburgh. Mr Carpenter was born at Tavistock, England, where his father was a solicitor. A short time later the family moved to Bath, where, at Somerset College, Mr Carpenter received his education, later studying law and qualifying as a solicitor in London. But the pioneering urge and deep love of the outdoors brought him to New Zealand in 1880, with a letter of introduction to the late James Fulton, of Taieri Station. His varied experiences there, in Southland, and in the North Island closed one phase of his adventures as a “ new chum,” but in 1884 another phase opened when he became interested in gold mining at Waipori. There he managed a claim and assisted in reviving the Waipori Gold Mining Association, of which ho was a most energetic secretary. He became secretary of the local school committee, and assisted greatly in reviving services in the Church of England. In those early pioneering days such districts benefited considerably by a man of Mr Carpenter’s education and knowledge. In 1&00 he revisited England, and on his return ultimately came to reside in Hunedin, where he again entered public life as a councillor in the Caversham Borough Council, and when amalgamation, with the city took place he was for a short time on the City Council. After retiring from public life his main interest always centred in the Church of England, where at various times he served as churchwarden, lay reader, and vestryman. Mr Carpenter is survived by his wife and two daughters.
