PRISONERS OF WAR
NEXT-DF-KIN NEGLIGENCE HOLDING UP PARCELS (PX) WELLINGTON, August 29. The Prisoners of War Inquiry Office, Wellington, states that the neglect of some next of kin to study the official brochure is likely to hold up the censoring of parcels, because very large numbers are coming in with the name and address of the sender not on the Red Cross label. In addition, acknowledgement cards have not been enclosed in some parcels, and in others the senders have either not included the duplicate contents slips or have filled in only one. A cablegram received from the (Red Cross Commissionef in the Middle East; Major W. G. Tweedy. states that the forwarding of personally-addressed parcels from Cairo to New Zealand prisoners of war has now been totally prohibited. Acknowledgements of quarterly parcels are now coming in freely. This week alone 280 cards -were received, practically all of them coming from Stalag 88. The office requests next of kin to forward copies only of any letters they may have received from camp P.G. 58, which were written in April or at the end of March. The number of prisoners on the list at the office is: Officially notified, 6,213; unofficial, 12.
