NEWS AND VIEWS [By St. Claiu.] Answer to Correspondent.—“ T.A.V.’’ (Palmerston) : (a) Red Royal was by Rospnor, and the first foal from Monoxide. He was several times placed as a three-year-old, and won four .times as a four-year-old, but not afterwards, (b) Monoxide was foaled in 1921. For the first 11 months of last season tho totalisator investments at racing and trotting meetings totalled £6,861,781, as compared with £8,681,573 for the corresponding period in the 1940-41 season. Coy has been a difficult mare to keep any condition on, but has done well since racing at Ricoarton early this month, . and now looks better than she has done for a rear past . . , Double Peter, winner of the principal handicap at the Auckland Trotting Glut' s meeting on Saturday, is a seven-year-old gelding by Peter Bingen from Eleawoh. Last season, out of 13 starts lip won three times and was second three times. Though the amount of undivided fractious for the first )1 months of last season, £35,395, may at first glance appear to he a large sum, it actually works out at slightly loss than a penny farthing in each pound invested. Royal Worthy easily stands out as the best straight-out trotter in tho Dominion, and on Saturday was easing up to win the Stewards’ Handicap by 60yds in 4min 28 , 2-ssec. In his last six starts Royal Worthy has won four times and finished second in the other two races. Rosenian’s schooling effort over _ two rounds of the steeplechase fences at WingaUii on Saturday morning was easily his best effort to 'date. Though a dozen fences were jumped tho distance covered would he not much over a mile and a-half, and lack of stamina appears to be Roseman's trouble, D. J. McDonald has an exceptionally good-looking yearling by Wild Chase from Beulah he expects to develop into a champion. Beulah is by Tractor from Bonnie Lake, and a full-sister to that good horse Mobile. This youngster is a half-brother to Janet Gaynor, Sir Amyas, and Silver Lily, all good winners. If totalisator figures can be taken as a guide to the popularity of racing and trotting, recent turnovers show how much the public appreciates a day’s sport. On Saturday two light-harness and one racing
fixture handled £174,625 10s, an increase of £52,781 10s on last year’s figures. When Gold Bar won the August Free-for-All on Saturday he scored bis first success since winning on the same track last November, and his return to form is pleasing. He was out in front practically all the way, but was tiring at the finish. His time was equal to slightly • better than 2m in 6sec to the mile. Owing to being away in the North Island when the entries closed, A. E. Didham missed engaging his Siegfried—Dissemble colt in the McLean Stakes. He is now being taught the rudiments of the game, and shapes nicely, but is on the small side. This youngster is marked very like Strip, who is a full brother to this two-year-old’s dam. There were only eight days of racing and trotting during the month of June this year as compared with 20 last year, and the stakes were £15,230 and £34,655 respectively. Totalisator investments dropped from £598,136 to £304,754, but the daily averages rose from £29,907 to £38,094. Taxation also shewed a drop, from £56,417 to £28,720. Though Facing Power won only two races last season, as a three-year-old. his success in the Futurity Stakes at Addington last Easter after winning the Derby Stakes in November entitled him to be considered the best of his season. In three subsequent starts last season he disappointed, but his good second to Busied Flush over a mile and a-quarter on Saturday marks a welcome return to form. True Mate carried 8.8 when she won over five furlongs at Oamaru last March in 61 2-ssec, and appears well treated with 7.10 in the President’s Handicap next Saturday. At the May meeting on the same crurs" True Mate (7.7) finished third to Bali (8.6) and Imperium (9.0) over six furlongs in Irain 12 4-sscc. Next Saturday True Mate will meet Bali on 131 b better terms. True 'Mate is a four-year-old mare by Man’s Pal from Kerbside, the dam of Hearth. Braw Lass, winner of the Trial Handicap at Addington, had at least three lengths to spare at the finish, and pul up the fastest two miles of the afternoon —4min 22 l-ssec. She is a seven-year-old mare by Wrack from Fanny Huon, and hers is a peculiar record, as she has won one race only in each of the four seasons she has been racing. In her last start previous to Saturday she won over a mile and a-nnf at Ashburton in June, and returned a sensational dividend. The Addington track was in very fast condition on' Saturday, and it is not often that such good times are registered so e arly in the season. Mervyn Derby was assessed at 3.54 in the Introductory Handicap, and bettered that time by 15 4-sseo. Draw Lass, 4.32, in the Trial Handicap, improved 9 4-ssec; Hardy Oak, 4.33 in the Queen Mary Handicap, went lOsec better; Coquette, 4.51 in the National Handicap, improved Bsec; Royal Worthy, 4.37 in the Stewards’ Handicap, went 8 3-ssec better; Countless, 4.37 in the Advance Handicap, improved lOsec; and Busted Flush, 2.48 in the Selwyn Handicap, went 6 4-ssec faster. With between seven and six furlongs to go in the National Handicap at Addington on Saturday, Great Blaze, who was favcvntc on the win machine, si tm 'ded and , fell, bringing down Foremost Junior, Special Edition, Pleasant Guy, and Jackaranda, and causing Bronze Eagle and Jesse Givens to be pulled up. At this stage of the race Coquette and Chatmos were in the leading division, and were not affected by the smash, but Haughty, who finished fast into third place, lost some ground. L. Frost, E. Townley, and J. Bryce, jun., were removed to the hospital for observation, but Bryce returned to the course shortly afterwai'ds and drove in the last three races.
