RUGBY
SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT PIRATES WIN SENIOR EVENT Scven-a-sido Rugby provides bright interludes which are all too rare in the more serious 15-a-side engagements, and the tournament, organised by the Otago Rugby Union for the benefit of clubs created some excitement and plenty of entertainment for tho 1,000 spectators who assembled at Carisbrook on Saturday. Three grades participated in the tournament, and as the spells were short—seven minutes in the case of the seniors and six minutes for the juniors —players were able to go full speed ahead tho whole time ; consequently the pace was a cracker and there were some brilliant runaway tries. There were also some spectacular tumbles which would have graced tho wrestling ring, yet not one minute of “ time off ” for attention to injuries. Another feature which pleasantly distinguished these matches from the full-sized clashes was the small number of stoppages for breaches of the rules. The ground was a little soft after the rain, hut although players bore the imprint of “ muddied oafs ” when leaving the fibld, no claim for “dirt money” appears to have been made. Pirates were too fast and nippy for the University seven in the senior final, but the students’ representatives won the second grade event from Port-Chal-mers after a good game. King’s High School played excellent football to beat Ravensbourne iii the final of the third grade. Tho tournajnent was well conducted, and it finished at 5.45.
