ANNUAL MEETINGS TAIERI There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of th Taieri Cricket Club, over which Mr L. M‘Adam presided. In moving the adoption of the annual report, the President referred to the death of one of th© club’s most popular members, Mr Barron, and as a mark of respect the meeting stood iu silence for a minute. Reviewing last season’s cricket, Mr M'Adam stated that the 1939-40 season had been a very successful one for all of tbe four teams entered in the various competitions, the third grade winning its competition. The motion was seconded by Mr W. Scott and carried. The trophies for averages gained during the season were then presented. S. Kirk gained the Ray Greaves Cup for (first and second teams) bowling. The cup for the best howling average iu the club went to R. Graham, while J. Milno topped the hatting averages. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Hon. F. Jones; president, Mr L. M'Adam; senior vicepresident, Mr F. Thurlow; vice-pre-sidents—Messrs J. P. Walls, A. F. Queleh, A. W. M'Cunn, L. Hazlett, Walker, Leith, J. Prosser, Pilling, A. F. Chevne, W. Muirhead, Mrs Blaney, W. Kirkland, J. O’Brien, R, T. Kirk, Hartstonge, J. M'Cartney; club captain, Mr F. Thorn; deputy club captain, Mr L. M'Adam; secretary, Mr J. Milne; treasurer, Mr J. Hendry; Committee—Messrs S. Kirk, F. Thorn, J. Renton, W. Johnson, J. Fogo, E. Chiles, D. Bowie: auditor, Mr A. H. Cooke; trustees, Mr W. Scott and treasurer; delegate to A.C.A., Mr L. M'Adam. Opening day was sot down as October 5, and arrangements were made for work to be put in at the wickets before then. NORTH-EAST VALLEY At the annual meeting of the Northeast Valley Cricket Club, the president (Mr G. Newey) occupied the chair. Moving the adoption of the annual report, the Chairman referred to the success of the intermediate team in winning its grado competition, and of the second team in being equal with St. Kilda in first place in the second grade B No. 1 competition. It was a fine gesture on the pai*t of the club, lie said to lend the Government £ls free of interest, and he hoped that it would be an inspiration to others to follow. Mr J, Anderson seconded the motion, which was carried. The treasurer (Mr R. H. Oxley), moving the adoption of the financial statement, said that the credit balance stood at £4O 9s—an increase of £9 on last year. Tlie election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr A. E. Hughes; delegate to Sports’ Protection Association, Mr G. Anderson; hon. auditors, Messrs H. Cullen and A. Riach. Trophies were presented as follows; Bedford Trophy (club batting average), I. A. Jones; intermediate—hatting, T. Hughes; howling, J. Cullen; second grado—hatting. T. A- Jones; howling, B. Gillespie; third grade—batting, A. Mtaeklo; howling. Tv. Brooks. _ • The endowment scheme was fully discussed.—Mr R. H. Oxley said that players would he giving freely to patriotic efforts, and for this reason the association should let the scheme stand over for the period of the war.—Mr R. Jones stated that the only ones not contributing to the scheme would be those who had left to fight for their country, and it was the duty of those loft behind to do all iu their power to make sure that grounds and other facilities were kept at their best for the use of the rotupied men. He favoured the supporting of the present scheme. The delegate to the annual meeting of the association was given a free hand in this and in the proposal that oneday matches he played in the coming season. The opening day was set down for October 5, on the Gardens Reserve.
