Robertson presided at the monthlv meeting of the Lawrence branch "of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The secretary was instructed to write to the Minister of Agriculture drawing attention to the fact that there was lime available at Oamaru, and asking that the free mileage be extended from Oamaru so that farmers at present unable to get lime would be able to get supplies. At present Oamaru lime is railed free as far as Henley, 100 miles from Oamaru. As Milbuxn is 10 miles from Henley, if lime from Oamaru was given 210 miles free railage the, surplus from Oamaru would be available. It was also pointed out that the Milburn orders could be rearranged, and lime from Oamaru would then come just as far as was necessary. By this latter method, at a certain point the Milburn lime and the Oamaru lime would meet, and there would be no unnecessary haulage by the railways. Mr R. C. Hall stated that representatives from this branch had attended meetings at Balclutba at the request of the South Otago Transport Limited, to deal with the matter of transport charges. Everything had been thoroughly overhauled and agreed upon, and in most cases reduction was to be made in the charges. It was decided to draw the company’s attention to the matter, and ask what had become of the report. It was agreed to support a request from the local Patriotic Committee asking for donations of produce, stock, etc., to bo auctioned at the 4ZB concert at Lawrence this month. A circular was received in connection with the agitation to obtain permission for farmers’ farm tractors to proceed along the roads without number plates to enable farmers to help one another. It was decided to support the proposal.
