FOOD MINISTER HAS 9D MEAL
MENU TEST IN WEST END The 9d a head “ literary ” luncheon given by Fbyles at Grosyenor House (says the London ‘ Daily" Telegraph,’ recently), with Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, as chairman, was a great success. The guests paid the usual 6s a head, and the profit will be devoted to war charities. Tho luncheon was served to more than 1,000 people, and this was the menu: —Clear Soup Woolton— Or —Thick Soup Economy".— Braised Tongue with Young Carrots. Summer Spinach. Baked Potatoes. Or Steamed Codfish with Parsley Sauce. Young Carrots and Peas. Small New Potatoes cooked in their ,skins. Or Tripe cooked in Milk and Onions. Runner Beans and Peas. Mashed Potatoes. Rice Imperial with Fresh Fruit Jelly. Kenya Coffee. Wholemeal Bread. Novelty of Tripe. Lord Woolton, who had braised tongue, speaking after lunch, said the guests would agree ‘ 1 that none of us is any the less satisfied for this particular experience of gastronomical simplicity.” Most of the guests agreed with Lord Woolton that none was less satisfied with the meal served, but some guests murmured a polite and amusing interruption that they were not used to tripe. One woman who had never eaten tripe, because of prejudice, said, after sampling it, that it was “ simply delicious.” The most popular course was the sweet, and guests gathered round the chef to congratulate him. He revealed that it cost 2d a head.
