BETTER RATIONS FOR PRISONERS THREE NEW SCALES A boiled or steamed pudding is to he issued with dinner on at least two days in each week in future to prisoners in His Majesty’s prisons in New Zealand. This is provided for in the amended Prison Regulations, which make regular improvements to the ration scale which has been in operation for some time.

The following quantities and scales of diet each day have been fixed: — —For Prisoners Employed.— Males. Females.

Milk, in the proportion 2& quarts to 100 rations (to be added to tea), shall be supplied to all convicted prisoners. Syrup, in terms of the first scale, is to be issued only to prisoners serving terms of one month and over. The variations in diet provide that 4oz bread may be substituted for either the oatmeal ration or for Boz potatoes; 11b fish (if procurable) may be issued in lieu of meat ration on one day a week; 3oz rice may be substituted for one-half the oatmeal ration on two days a week, sugar ration on such days to be increased by ioz.
