ELEPHANT SAVES KEEPER

CAGE-MATE KEPT AT BAY Queen Tut, an elephant in the Forest Park Zoo at Fort Worth, Texas, saved an assistant keeper from being trampled to death by another elephant when she shoved aside her attacking cage mate and allowed rescuers to drag the unconscious keeper out of the cage. Before Queen Tut came to the rescue, however, the keeper, James Brown, 42 years old, was injured severely. Hamilton Hittson, the zoo’s director, told a ‘ New York Times ’ representative that Brown was in a serious condition. “He had gone into the elephant shed to feed Queen Tut, and Sugar, a 4,0001 b hunchback elephant that we’ve never trusted,” said Mr Hittson. “ Other workers heard a commotion and found Brown on the floor. He had been trampled on the head and chest, but after the first assault Queen Tut rushed in, shunted the smaller elephant aside, and held her at hay. “ If Brown lives, he owes his life to the big elephant, for we never could have reached him without her help.”
