WAIPORI FIRE
SIXTY ACRES OF PINES DESTROYED ORIGIN NOT YET KNOWN The unfortunate outbreak of fire, the origin of which is unknown, that swept through a portion of the young pine forest on the shores of Lake Mahinerangi, Waipori. yesterday, destroyed upwards of 60 acres of young trees, ranging in height from 2ft to 9ft. It is believed the fire originated in a corner of the plantation adjacent to the site of the dam, but a complete inspection will be made_ to-day by the chairman of the electricity department (Mr D. C. Cameron) and the city electrical engineer (Mr G. T. Edgar), after which more detailed information as to the cause of the fire may be available.
The outbreak occurred about niidday, and all the men available at the power station were quickly on the scene, while an appeal for assistance was also sent to Dunedin. The superintendent of reserves (Mr M. R. Skipworth), with a party of men, went out to Waipori, but so efficiently had the men on the scene tackled the blaze that they had it under control by the time Mr Skipworth’s party arrived. This is one of the finest afforestation areas under the control of the City Council, and citizens will learn with regret of the destruction of this big acreage of young trees.
