FIRE IN BOROUGH CHAMBERS
PUBLIC LIBRARY SUFFERS [Per United Press Association.] GORE, September 13. Fire early this morning extensively damaged the Mataura Borough Council Chambers and the Coronation Hall. The brigade faced a difficult' task owing to the fire having spread from the rear of the building to the ceiling, and an hour elapsed before the flames were subdued. The public library of 2,000 books .suffered through fire, smoke, and water, as also did the reading room, where valuable photographic records were destroyed. But the main office escaped lightly, and the contents of the strongroom and the office records are intact. The insurance was £I,OOO on the building and furnishings in the Standard Office.
