TE ANAU HOTEL

GOVERNMENT CONTROL EFFORTS TO POPULARISE LAKE DISTRICT Government control of the Te Anau Hotel was resumed last Saturday, stated Mr R. G. Sincock, district tourist manager, to a ‘ Star ’ reporter to-day. It was explained that ae accommodation huts on Milford Track, the Hotel Milford, Cascade Creek Camp, and the steamer on Lake Te Anau aro run by the Government Tourist and Publicity Department, it was not desirable, in the best interests of tourist business, that control should be divided, and this, together with the possibility of effecting economies in running costs by the action taken, prompted the department to take over the Te Anau Hotel, the lease of which had almost expired. It was stated that a satisfactory settlement from the point of view of both parties had been arrived at. It is announced that, with a view to popularising Lake Te Anau as a holiday resort, it is proposed to make a material reduction in the tariff and. to advertise throughout the Dominion the many attractions of the Lake district. Mr W.’A. Pickford, formerly district manager of the Government Tourist Bureau, Invercargill, has been appointed manager of the Te Anau Hotel. Mr Pickford is a SonthLander and was educated at the Southland Boys’ High School. During Ins time in charge of the Invercargill office he has done a great deal in the development of travel to southern tourist resorts.
