Advice has been received of the sale last month for breaking up of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company's twin-screw refrigerated cargo and ‘passengersteamer Tainui. The ship was sold to the Hughes Bolckow Shipbreaking Company Ltd., Blyth, for about £22,500. The Tainui, which was built at Belfast in 1908, was associated continuously with the trade between New Zealand and England, being one of the fastest mail ships in the service in the years after the war. The liner had accommodation for 203 tourist passengers. She left Wellington for Southampton on her last voyage in February. The end of the Tainui recalls the announcement of the sale for breaking up some months ago of the former Arawa and Matatua, two Shaw Savill and Albion Line ships which for many years were associated with the Tainui. Both ships were in a German passenger service. The Matatua, as the Ilsqnstein, was to have been broken up at Glasgow, and the Arawa, as the Konigstein, was to have been dismantled at Ghent.
