GLASS BRAKE LININGS

One of the last things motorists would think of associating with glass is brake lining, yet there is quite a possibility, in the not distant future, that glass fibre brake linings may be used iii automobiles. Investigations are being- conducted in this connection overseas, and it is believed that a mat of glass fibres bound together with synthetic resin will provide a lining which will bo heat resisting, as it acts as a buffer, preventing the transfer to the brake-shoes of heat generated by friction when the brakes are applied. The heat, instead, goes to the brake drums where it is dissipated. Cooler brakes would result hlass-fibre linings, it is believed, would prove less subject to dampness, and would not grab. The patent for brake linings incorporating glass fibres, has been assigned to one of the world s largest motor corporations.
