DUNEDIN'S RESPONSE
FIRST DAY S RECRUITING MEDICAL EXAMINATION TO-NIGHT As a result of the first day’s recruiting for a force of 6,600 men for service overseas or at home there were 341 registrations in Area 11, comprising Dunedin and Oamaru, yesterday. This figure will be considerably strengthened by a number of postal registrations received to-day. The first batch has been notified that the medical examination will be conducted tonight, and others will be called np later. It was stated this morning by the area staff officer (Major A, Bongard, M.C., N.Z.S.C.) that all eligible single men at least may expect notification to be medically examined during the next few days. The first four registrations were from officers, and the first two from serving officers of the Otago Regiment. These were Captains C. Wilson and R. S. Orr. They were followed by Captain R. G. M'Kinlay, Reserve of Officers of the Otago Regiment, ,and Captain E. E. S. Clark, Reserve of Officers of the Southland Regiment. The remainder of the first dozen to register were R. Harrison. P. W. H. Burns, P. E. Crawford, W. A. Paterson, L. IJ. Smith, L. H. Hoffman, Lieutenant U. H. Parata, of tho Otago Regiment, and J. H. Haughton. This morning there was not the rush to enlist that was experienced yesterday. but there was a steady stream of applicants throughout the day. Amongst the men who have come forward to date are an ex-Grenadier Guardsman with 10 years’ service, a former lieutenant m the Royal Engineers, and an ex-Royal Marine. All classes of the community are well represented, from company directors and managers to labourers, farmers, tradesmen, and Government servants. A considerable amount of organisation and office work is required, and a staff of five clerks, a typisto ami at one stage, three assistants, has been kept busy cheeking and recording the registrations. The registration office at the Drill Hall is open from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.. and full particulars may be obtained there. AUCKLAND ENROLMENTS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 13. The total enlistments in Auckland Citv for the special force to midday were 1,339, including 60 enlistments to-day.
