BURGLARY ALLEGED

THREE YOUTHS CHARGED In the Police Court this afternoon, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., Martin Thomas Atkinson. Nui Karetai, and Sydney William Jarvis, each 20 years of age, were charged with breaking and entering the premises of Ernest Adams Ltd. and stealing therefrom 3s 6d ja money; breaking and entering the premises of J. R. M'Kenzie Ltd., and stealing a quantity of cigarettes'valued at 15s; breaking and entering the office of Smith and Lousley with intent to commit a crime, and breaking and entering the premises of Grey’s Collecting Agency and stealing therefrom the the sum of 10s in money. Atkinson and Jarvis were further charged with breaking and entering the premises of ,M‘Callum and Co. and stealing therefrom £43 10s, and Atkinson and Karetai with attempting to break and enter the Star Stores with intent to commit a crime. The offences were alleged to have been committed between the dates of August 15 and August 28. Mr B. S. Irwin appeared, for Karetai, and Mr O. G. Stevens for Atkinson and Jarvis. Ser-geant-detective T. ¥. Hall prosecuted. Evidence was given by Arthur James Quinn and Edmund Frederick Smith that entrance had been gained to the respective premises as follows: —Adams Ltd. by breaking a small pane of glass in the window of the main office: MTvenzies Ltd. by forcing a grille at a rear upstairs window; Smith and Lousley by breaking a pane of glass in the office door. Cecil Bland Boatwood, assistant caretaker at the New Zealand Express Com-pany’s-buildings, said that at 8.30 p.m* on August 23 he noticed the three accused going uostairs in that building. Witness recognised Atkinson as having an office on the fourth floor. Witness left the building at 10.5 p.m., after living the signal for all persons to vacate it, and having made the usual inspection. . Walter Thomson, caretaker in the same building, gave further evidence regarding finding the offices mentioned open. (Proceeding.)
