FAMOUS SCOTS HYMN WRITER
THE REV. HQRATfUS SONAR, D.D.
It was 50 years on July 31, 1889, since the passing; of the Rev. Horatiu* Bonar. D.D.. a native of Edinburgh. His first charge was the North Parish, Kelso, but in 1866 he was called to a newlv-fornied congregation in Edm« burgh, and towards the end of that year the Chalmers Memorial _ Church was opened, and in this he ministered for over 40 years. . In 1883 he was Moderator of the As. sembly of the Free Church of Scot, land,'and in 1888 his ministerial jubi* lee was celebrated. ■ , He is best remembered to-day as tn* principal hymn writer of Scotland, and ranks with the chief hymn writer* of England—Watts,' Wesley, Heber, and Keble. , The hymns of few hymn writers are so widely employed on both sides of the Atlantic as those by him.
