WDN WITH LAST KICK PIRATES BEAT KAIKORAI Tho principal match of the day was that at Carisbrook between Pirates and Kaikorui, in which the play was bright and cheery, with bursts of passing by either side which promised well, but usually failed to fulfil that promise when it came to finishing off. Tho first scoro came when, in attempting to clear, a Pirates player butted into the goal-post, and in tho ensuing muddle Hanna secured and ran over. Chapman missed the kick. Perriam, though mishandling a bit, was frequently in the picture with Muir. On the other hand, Chapman was a stumbling block to the attackers. Some others were not, however, and M‘Lay, a line little forward, was allowed to cross tho lino and score. Perriam missed. A nice burst by Hawkins, and Beadle came 'through and scored behind the posts for Perriam to convert and Pirates to lead 8-3 at the interval. In the second! spell Kaikorai put on tho pressure, and not long after the resumption Scott secured in a crush. Play was breezy, tho ball being given plenty of air, and, despite good forward play by M‘Lay and Beadle, Kaikorai came through, Manning making a great run, following which Chapman goalod from a penalty. In tho last few minutes Pirates attacked and were awarded a penalty 35yds out. It was tho last kick of tho match, and Kaikorai were chagrined to see tho ball strike the bar and go over for the winning points. Perriam was the kicker. Pirates 11 Kaikorai 9 HONOURS EVEN DUNEDIN AND ZINGARi DRAW The early match at Carisbrook was that between Dunedin and ZingariRichniond, and it began fairly punctually in perfect weather and ground! conditions, but before only about 50 spectators. There was, too, a “ picnic ” air about the play, which could not be described as first-class, but the players obviously enjoyed themselves. As to tho onlookers, they put in the time, mostly speculating as to “ who’s who?” —so many strangers were there in the competing teams. In the first spell of the “ runabout ” M'Cutcheon went over to score for Zingari after a really good run by W. Mason; while in the second half M‘Ewan raced through and evened matters. Neither try was converted, and the match ended in a draw, which was a fair indication of tho merits. Dunedin 3 Ziugari-Richuiond 3 UNION'S GAME SOUTHERN AGAIN BEATEN Southern, with a ragged team, were again defeated on Saturday, this time by Union, championship leaders. However, there was not a great deal between the two sides, the run of luck being with Union. Final scores were: Union 14, Southern 8. Union drew first blood when Gibson forced his way over to score near the corner, but the kick failed. Pollock added three points when he kicked a nice penalty goal, and just before halftime Black, for Southern, put over a free kick, making the scores Union 6. Southern 3. After the change-over the ball was tossed about by Southern for Black to score wide out, and lie converted his own try. Southern did not bold the lead long, for Gibson again forced his wav over at the corner, and shortly before time Slyfield scored for Gensik to convert, the final scores being: Union 14 Southern ... 8 The referee was Mr F. Swete. WELL-EARNED VICTORY TAIERI DEFEATS ALHAMBRA Pressing hard throughout the game, Taicri earned their victory over Alhambra at the Caledonian Ground. M’Cartney opened tho scoring for Taieri, dashing across from a scrum, but Broadfoot shortly afterwards evened the score with a penalty. A Taicri man, M'Cunn, playing as substitute for Alhambra, found the Taieri line near the corner, and just before half-time Fox 'kicked a good field goal. Alhambra 10, Taieri 3. Gibbons increased Taieri’s score, going over between the posts, and Wilkins converted; Murray and Wilkins brought the total up to 13 before once again a Taieri substitute scored for Amapibr*. Broadley ran for 30yds and scored, Wilkins again converting. Taieri ... 18 Alhambra 13 Mr L. E Macasscy refereed the game. AN UNEXPECTED WIN EASTERN DISTRICTS BEAT NORTH OTAGO A fast and spectacular match between Eastern Districts and North Otago on Saturday at Palmerston resulted in an unexpected win for Eastern Districts by 12 points to 7. Except for 20 minutes, in the second spell Eastern Districts had control of the game throughout. The forwards were in fine form, and they gave the backs every opportunity to go into action. The North Otago defence was excellent, and but for solid tackling Eastern Districts’ win would have been more decisive. The scorers for tho winning team, which led 3-0 at half-time, were L. Palmer. Strachan, and Gunn. Strachan also kicked a penalty goal. North Otago’s points came from a field goal by M'Laron and a try by Gray. None of tho tries by either side was converted. The referee was Mr O. M. Olsen, of Palmerston. North Otago won the junior match with Eastern Districts bv 27 noints to 8. The referee was Mr O’Reilly.
