CHAIN STORE INQUIRY
EVIDENCE AGAINST PETITION [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON. October 8. Evidence was given in the chain stores inquiry to-day by representatives of chain footwear stores and the Farmers’ Co-operative Associations. _ . Giving testimony against the petition it was stated for Hannah’s that they were not concerned with the opposition to departmental stores, as the company’s shops dealt with footwear only and stocked large quantities of goods manufactured in New Zealand. Taxation that would force the company s shops out of business in favour of independent shops would be detrimental to the interests of New Zealand manufacturers, tanners, and others. The case of the farmers’ co-operative associations was put by Mr J. H. Russell, general manager of the tanners Co-operative Federation.
