matai stewards leave vessel [Pek United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October 8. Six stewards and three cooks emnloved on the Government lighthouse steamer Matai to-night gave the master of the vessel, Captain Burgess, •74 hours’ notice of their intention to leave the ship. The men’s decision was the sequel to their refusal to carry stores on board in the afternoon. The captain refused to comment on the matter to-night, but the men alleged that the captain was adamant that they would have to carry sacks pf potatoes on board, each sack weighing 2cwt The men claimed that m _ the cooks and stewards’ award it provided that member of the union should not carrv stores weighing over 701 b. “ We were given the option of getturn off the ship or carrying the stores on board,” said one man, “ and we decided to give notice.” The Matai arrived to-day from Hauraki Gulf, and is scheduled to leave on Monday for Wellington via the North Cape and the west coast.
