RACING IN SYDNEY COMMENT ON EVENTS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, October 5. (Received October 5, at 12.30 p.m.) Gold Rod jarred a front joint during- the running of the Derby, and is not likely to start in the Melbourne Cup. , Silver Jubilee broke down badly in the Epsom Handicap, and there is doubt as to whether this horse will race again. The, 1 Sydney Morning Herald,’ commenting on the principal races on Saturday, says: “The Epsom Handicap was one of the most eventful in the long history of this important mile race. Gay Lover did not keep a straight course in the straight, veering out apparently under pressure. Gay Goer and Capris provided a great duel which ended so unsatisfactorily. Capris is the first mare to win the Epsom Handicap for 30 years. The Derby was marred by Shakespeare’s fall and by a change in tactics in the riding of Mala, who was not ridden with judgment, and tho race was made for Talking. Mala had Gold Rod beaten at one and a-half furlongs from the finish, but the effort took toll of his reserves and he fell an easy prey to Talking’s challenge. The Spring Stakes served to emphasise the superiority of the New Zealander, Silver Ring, and the prospects of Sydney horses winning any weight-for-ago races at this meeting are not bright.
