CROQUET CLUB OPENINGS
Logan Park Club. The Logan Park Croquet Club opened its 1936-37 season in bright sunshine on Thursday afternoon. Mrs C. Stanley Smith (president), in a happy little speech, welcomed visitors and members. In the absence of Mrs Briggs (president of the Otago Association), Mrs J. M'Donald spoke on her behalf, and congratulated the club on the splendid condition of the lawns, and wished the club every success in the coming season. Mrs Smith then asked Mrs M'Donald to run the first hoop, thus declaring the season opened. It was very pleasing to see Mrs Cooper back on the lawns after an absence of 12 months through illness. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, all present being the guests of Mrs Smith, who presented the usual birthday cake, which this year had seven candles alight. Competitions were held on the lawns, these being enjoyed by visitors. The _ winners were:—Mrs Gray, Sirs Cornish, Mrs Forrester, and Mrs Mitchell.
Punga Club. This chib was unfortunate in the weather for its opening yesterday afternoon, when, on account of heavy showers, the function was held in the pavilion. Owing to the excellent arrangements of the Pavilion Committee ample room was found for the very large number of guests, and the pavilion was made very cosy for the occasion. The president (Mrs John M'Donald), in a charming speech of welcome, congratulated members on the excellent condition of the lawns and gardens, duo. to the untiring efforts of the greenkeeper, Mr Killin, and the Lawn Committee, under the guidance of Miss Brown. She announced that a “doubles” tournament would be commenced on Wednesday, to get all members into play right away. Mrs Briggs, president of the 0.C.A., brought greetings from the parent body, and congratulated Punga on winning the junior shield and on securing a place in interclub play. Cr Batchelor, on behalf of the Reserves Committee of the City Council, thanked the club for its efforts in beautifying part of the reserves, and His Worship the Mayor, who was accompanied by Mrs Cox, declared the lawns open for play. Afternoon tea was served, but on account of weather conditions it -was not possible to have any play. An apology was received from Mr Tannock. Mr John M'Donald, one of the club’s vice-presidents, proposed a vote of thanks to the mayor and mayoress and to Cr Batchelor for their interest in the club’s welfare, and thanked Mrs Briggs for her presence.
