ELDERLY COUPLE'S ESCAPE GAR CRASHES INTO HOUSE GAS COOKER WRECKED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 28. Dropping off to sleep again after being awakened by the noise of a motor car crashing into .the side of their house, an elderly couple awoke later to find themselves enveloped by gas, wmch was escaping from a cooker The mishap occurred at the home of Mr and Mrs James Carroll, of Colombo street. , , An unattended motor car, which had been left with the brake on 100yds further up the hill, moved backwards, and, gathering speed rapidly, struck the side of the building, which borders the footpath. Part of the wall was pushed in, a door inside the dwelling wrenched from its hinges, and the gas cooker torn from its fittings, and thrown into the centre of the kitchen, enabling the gas to escape freely. Mr Carroll said later that he and his wife thought there had been an earthquake. Had they been sleeping downstairs he believed they would have been overwhelmed by the gas.
