“BAD AND PERNICIOUS" SYSTEM
ASSISTANTS MULCTED IN WAGES MAKING VP STOCK AND CASH SHORTAGES [Pee United Phebs Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 28. Outspoken comment on the practice of George Henry Taigel, managing director of the Newmarket Ltd., a cake shop in the city, in making his shop assistants make up stock and cash shortages out of wages, was expressed by the magistrate, Mr Levvey, in court to-dav, when six charges were preferred by tie Labour Department against Taigel. The Magistrate said it was not his duty to consider the reprehensibility or otherwise of Taigel’s system, but it was bad and pernicious. If girls did not make good the shortages they knew they would be sacked. Much as he disliked the system he could not find_ that these payments constituted premiums, and the information would be dismissed,.
“ There must be some other way in which vou can recover this money fpr the girl 8)” he said to the Labour Department inspector who prosecuted. The charges consisted of three of failing to pay the prescribed wages, and three of accepting premiums. In evidence it was stated that Taigel had a key to the shop as well as the manageress. He denied that he took stock from the shop and then charged the girls with the shortage.
