STEERING FAULTS

Steering faults are frequently ignored until they are imperatively serious. It might be noticed that there is wheel wobble or that tho steering has become stiff or has too much play, but tho trouble is not so pronounced that the car is difficult to handle on good roads. The careless motorist might say to himself, “ It’s nothing to worry about; I’ll have it fixed if it gets worse.” Yet there might come an emergency when safety depends on a sudden swerve, the immediate response of the steering, or precisely accurate driving through a narrow avenue of escape, as, for example, a width of road which leaves only inches to spare between an oncoming vehicle and the ditch. Tnen it is that looseness in the steering gear, and consequent play in the wheel or stiffness owing to under-inflated tyres or other causes might be the undoing of the most alert driver.
