GRADUATED LAND TAX
ABOLITION REQUESTED [Per United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, September 25. When referring to the Government’s taxation proposals at the monthly meeting of the Southland Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day, Mr R. Sim said that the views of most organisations were diametrically opposed to one. another, so that there were two distinct lines of thought. It was agreed that money had to be found to carry on the business of the country. Mr Sim added that the Government should be congratulated at least on not having been stampeded into unorthodox means of raising the necessary money. << I would condemn it, however, for raising the income tax levied on middleclass incomes,” he said. Mr D. Macdonald said that the land tax should be abolished, as it would stifle production. On his suggestion a motion was passed requesting the abolition of the graduated land tax.
