DUNEDIN SWIMMING CLUB

THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES The annual report of the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club, to be presented at the annual meeting on Tuesday night at the Wilson Hall, states inter alia: — Both from a swimming point of view and the financial aspect the season 1933-3(> has been quite successful. Despite the energy shown by several members there has been a slight drop in membership. The total financial membership at the close of the season is: Senior men, 39; senior ladies, 22; juniors, 10(1. It is with regret that we note the loss of Miss P. Sporle, S. W. Jarvis, and j. W. Barry, who have moved to other centres. The club is the poorer through their departure, and also we note the temporary departure of D. Newall, who is in Australia. The annual carnival took place before Christmas this season, December 4, but although successful from a swimming point of view the entries being excellent, it was unfortunately poorly supported by the general public, and resulted in a loss financially. Once again the club had the Otago championship flying squadron relay allotted to it, and it is with pride that we record that the club team was once again the winner.

During the season interest in water polo among the older members was not as keen as previously, and the result was our A team lost the Donald Stuart Banner after holding it for five years, to Kiwi A. However, we take great pleasure in recording that the B team, comprised of young members, won the B grade championship against much older players. ~We congratulate the_ following members who gained places in the_ victorious Otago team at the national championships: J. O. Byrnes, D. Newall, B. Kerr, and P. W. Harkess. Congratulations are also due to the club members who gained a plac€ in the Otago B team: C. W. Elliott, J. W. Barry, and J. D. O’Drisooll. The races for the J. J. Clark Cup and W. F. James Cup were contested during the season, and some good racing was witnessed. The senior championship for the J. J. Clark Cup was again won by E. B. Toase, with _B. Kerr second aiurJ. D. O’Driscoll third. The junior competition for the _W. _F. James Cup was won by D. Leckie, with Miss J. Harris second, Miss S. M'Kay third, and W. Williams fourth. The club is indebted to one of our life members, Mr W. J. Hooper, who presented a cup to he competed for by lady members. This cup was won by Miss M. Mathieson and Miss P. Duncan second. The E. H. James harbour race was held at Macandrew Bay in conjunction with the annual picnic, and resulted in a win for Miss 1?. Duncan, with J. O. Byrnes second and fastest time, and B. Kerr third. Mr R. Gordon, a staunch supporter of the club, presented a cup for fastest time in this race. This has been a long-felt want, and the club appreciates the i action of Mr Gordon. J. 0. Byrnes is the first winner of this cup. Once again members were prominent in this event, and congratulations are due to J. O. Byrnes, of our club, the winner, Miss P. Duncan, gaining second place and J. W. Barry fourth, Members were once again to the for* in the Otago provincial championships, and the club is proud of the many members who performed with great credit.

As will be seen from the following results, Dunedin Club members played their part, gaining 30 out of 50 points for Otago to win the Yaldhurst Shield: J. D. The following club members were in the Otago _ 500yds flying squadron relay team, gaining third place at the national championships;—E. B. Toase, J. D. O’Driscoll, J. Barry, and J. W. Clulee.

At the New Zealand junior and intermediate championships places were gained as follow: —C. Eckhold; First intermediate boys? diving championship. S. W. We again congratulate Mrs M‘Taggart on her appointment as chaperon to the intermediate and junior championship team to Hamilton and also the senior team at the national championships. The Social Committee again had charge of the social activities of the club ,and carried out its duties so efficiently that they enlarged the finances by over £l7. A deep debt of gratitude is due to those energetic members who work so hard for the benefit of,the club. Congratulations are due to IVIr D. C. liannatyne, the stalwart of the club, who was the recipient of a New Zealand Swimming Association blazer. We have aiso to congratulate Mr E. H. James, another old member, who gained a blazer. It is with regret that we record the sad death of one of our very young members, Roy Desmond Simpson, who passed away during the season as a result of an accident. Although we started with a good balance, as a result of one or two heavy payments and some members not paying their subscriptions as promptly as should be the case, we have practically maintained the same balance, and thanks are due to the Social Committee, whose hard work is responsible for this state of affairs.
