ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK
THIS YEAR'S OBSERVANCE For some years past it has been, the practice of all societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals in New Zealand to hold an animal welfare week. Mr J. A. Forbes, of Oamaru, first established this movement in New Zealand, and for several years he undertook the organising. The methods of celebrating this week adopted by the Otago Society are to circularise the ministers, superintendents of all churches and Sunday schools throughout Otago requesting them to address their congregations, Sunday schools, and scholars on the desirability of showing kindness to animals. The head masters of all schools throughout Otago have been written to and pamphlets on kindness to animals have been distributed to all schools. Mr J. C. Willis, a member of the committee of the society, will deliver an address from 4YA on the objects of animal welfare week on Monday evening. Big Brother Bill will also address his radio audience during the week. In Great Britain, Europe, and America animals’ world day is held annually on October 4, and in New Zealand animal welfare week has been arranged to coincide with animals’ world day. Parents are requested to encourage their children to•> love and care for animals and birds, and it is hoped they will do their part and assist in the objects of animal welfare week. Though it is hard to detect persons guilty of cruelty to animals, citizens would be doing a public service by reporting offenders. It is hoped that the objects of animal welfare week will be the means of creating a greater love for animals and birds and so ensure their future welfare.
