M.P. ASSAULTED
MAORI FOOTBALLER FINED [Pee United Peess Association.] HAWBRA, September 26. As a sequel to an assault on Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., in the WellingtonNew Plymouth express on June 24, fines totalling £6 10s 6d, with witnesses’ expenses of £1 10s, were imposed on Manny Down in the Hawera Court. The fine included £1 10s 6d compensation to Mr Dickie for damage to his hat. The default was fixed at one month’s imprisonment, and Down was allowed a month to pay. The incident occurred at the Aramoho' Railway Station, when a first class carriage was invaded by members of the Wanganui Maori Rugby team, who were journeying to Waitara to participate in celebrations commemorating the unveiling' of the memorial to the late Sir Maui Pomare. Down, who was a member of the team, struck Mr Dickie a blow in the face, the result being such as to cause the _ victim to be unable to eat his meals in comfort for a week, as ho explained to- the magistrate.
