Reports from Spain state that General Yagues’s right wing, consisting of Moors and Legionaries, is endeavouring to drive a wedge to separate the Government forces occupying the main road from Talavera to Madrid in the hope of marching to the relief of the rebels who are defending the Toledo alcazar, but it is making little progress against the dogged resistance of the superior loyalist army. Meanwhile Government forces have launched a savage onslaught, .showering the alcazar with shells, bombs, and hand grenades, but they have failed to dislodge the defenders. Three insurgent planes flew over the alcazar and endeavoured to drop food, but were driven off. The pilots reported that the defenders are likely to hold out until relieved. Lord Plymouth presided. The meeting was attended by representatives of 26 countries. The committee had before it the question raised by the French representative whether the export of gas masks to Spain should be regarded as being prohibited under the agreement for non-intervention. All the replies so far received indicated that the Governments concerned were of the opinion that the export of gas masks should not* bo regarded as being so prohibited. The committee had also under consideration a complaint respecting alleged breach of the agreement for nonintervention. The committee agreed that, in the event of such a complaint being received, it certinly would be its duty to examine it with a view to ascertaining the facts, but that the complaint should not be taken into consideration unless it was submitted on behalf of a Government which was a party to the non-intervention agreement and unless it was regarded by the Government preferring it as being of sufficient importance and as being founded on evidence of sufficient weight to afford reasonable presumption that, in fact, some breach of the agreement had occurred.
