TAIERI COMPETITIONS
ANNUAL FESTIVAL The Coronation Hall was well filled last evening on the occasion of the second day of the fourth annual competitions. Mr C. R. Mazengarb presided, and at an interval pointed out v,he value of such competitions to the district and complimented the people on possessing such an abundance of talent. He also thanked the public for the support given. The programme was a very long one. It was shortly after midnight when the last item was concluded, and a commencement had been made at 7.30 o’clock. The contests included brass selections, juvenile playettes, action songs, character sketches, and recalls from Saturday, adult pianoforte selections, and the church choir contest. Miss Smellio’s rhythm not always sure and more contrast could have been shown in the tempo. Miss Tait opened her selection beautifully. The rhythm was not steady, but the expression was good. In places the piano passages could have been quieter. There was a slight loss of pitch, and there could have been a better ending. The second placed choir sang the anthem well. There was a loss of pitch and the sopranos slurred. The hymn was good, especially the interpretation, but _ at times the final consonants were missing. □ RAMA. Playettes, limit of six players under 16, 15 minutes, four entries. —Juvenile Players 1, Miss Swallow’s Seniors 2, Four Small Players 3, Miss Swallow’s Juniors h.c. In announcing the awards Miss Mackenzie said every entry had been enjoyable. Much thought and training had been devoted to the preparation of the plays. Very special mention was made of the stage settings and lighting effects. In our report of Saturday’s session the name of Miss Hilary E. Mann appeared as third in the elocution section, recitation under nine years. This should have read Hilary E. Mason.
