EMPLOYMENT OF YOUTHS
RECOMMENDATIONS OF JOINT CONFERENCE [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 15. The acute problem of the employment of youths, and young Sien was the subject of a joint conference yesterday between representatives of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation and Federated Trades Councils. Resolutions were adopted welcoming the Labour Minister’s announcement that it is intended to exempt indentured apprentices from automatically coming under the provisions of the basic wage of 21; recommending that district registrars be instructed to call meetings of the apprenticeship committees in the four centres in those industries where committees are not at present functioning; and) that the legislation be amended to provide for ono committee for each industry in each centre, instead of each industrial district.
It was agreed to recommend manufacturers’ and workers’ organisations throughout the Dominion to bring before the apprenticeship committees the question of approving of special, contracts to allow the apprenticeship of youths starting between 18 and 23. The above resolutions are all subject to the approval of the organisations represented at the conference.
