“CONCEITED BUSYBODIES”
0.8. ON FILM CENSORSHIP FOUR-COLUMN LETTER IN ‘NEW YORK TIMES ' Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, September 14. (Received September 15, at 1.50 p.m.) Charges of interference by “ Catholic Action ” in the proposed movie production of St. Joan made by Mr Bernard Shaw in a four-column letter to the editor of the ‘ New York Times,’ are denied by the National League _of Decency and the, Haye’s organisation, as well as by various heads of the Catholic Church and movie censorship bodies. The letter, which is characteristically Shavian, says: “I have every thing to fear from meddling amateur busyboaies, and “ Catholic Action ” turns out to be a body of such conceited busybodies.” The letter further stresses that the play in the past has been regarded by the church in a friendly fashion, and concludes with a vigorous attack on censorship generally. The organisations deny interference and express bewilderment and insist that they know nothing of the. matter.
