THE GOVERNMENT'S PROGRAMME waNship to be built in commonwealth Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, September 12, (Received September 12, at 11 a.m.) In announcing the Government’s defence programme the Minister of Defence (Sir Parkhill) said it included a new warship to ho built in Australia. * The armaments in the cruisers Australia and Canberra were to bo modernised. The aircraft firstline strength would be 194 planes, of which 96 would he in service this year. The permanent army would number 2,300 and the militia almost certainly 35,000. There would be anti-gas training and provision of equipment.
