SCOTTISH COMMUNITY SING
■< DORA LINDSAY FAREWELLED
Under the capable leadership of Mr Arthur Macdonald, whose presence always inspires spontaneous enthusiasm, the community sing conducted in the Town Hall last evening by the council of Dunedin Scottish Societies was an unqualified success. The very attractive programme arranged drew a large attendance; which demonstrated its approval of the special items in no uncertain manner and accorded the choruses its whole-hearted support. The function was commenced with the piping of Miss Dora Lindsay, the guest of honour, to the platform by the Highland Pipe Band, accompanied by representatives of the Council of Scottish Societies, the Caledonian, Gaelic, Burns Club, Piping and Dancing, Orkney and Shetland, Highland Pipe Band, Dunedin Scottish, and St. Andrew’s Societies being included. The principal items of the evening were presented by Miss Lindsay. That delightful comedienne amused the house immensely and was accorded prolonged ovations. The solo rendered by the leader, 1 Misty Islands of the Highlands,’ was no less favourably received, bearing remarkable testimony to his popularity. The playette, ‘ Aunt Kirsty Visits Archie,’ presented by members of the St. Andrew’s Society, was a welcome addition to the programme. A trio comprising Messrs G. Currie, W. Mackenzie, and A. Rawlinson presented drinking songs. Miss Pat Atkinson, the talented Highland dancer, gave a fine performance of the scan triubhais, while a combination of throe parties of dancers were associated in reel and fling items. Orchestral selections were rendered hy the Dunedin Orphans’ Chib, accompanied by Pipers A. M'Millan and L. M’Killop, with popular airs by the Highland Pipe Band. The customary address to the haggis was performed by Mr Alex. Sligo, followed by a Highlandman’s toast. Unquestionably the outstanding participant was Miss Lindsay, who was tendered a farewell hy the lender, on behalf of the Council of Scottish Societies, at the conclusion of the sing. Mr Alf. Pcttitt gave his usual brilliant service as accompanist.
