FARMERS SHARE IH CHEAP HOUSING [From Ouk Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 10. When the Agricultural Workers’ Bill was discussed in the committee stage of tho House, Mr Armstrong (Minister of Labour) referred to the requirements regarding accommodation of farm workers, mentioning that they were similar to those already in the statutes._ He assured members that, in connection with tho Government’s comprehensive housing scheme, there would be provision under which the farmers could provide cheap houses for their employees. Mr Coates: Will they get the benefit of dcbt-froo money ? Tho Minister: Yes! If everybody gets the benefit of ckbt-frcc money the farmer should share it. This reference to the £3,500,000 of costless credit which is associated with the housing scheme provoked keen interest on the Opposition benches, and the Minister’s remark was followed by a chorus of “ .We’ll all be round in the morning.”- •»' * * REDRESS RECOMMENDED. Ex-Police Officer P. Maloney, who petitioned the House asking for redress and that certain records be expunged from the ‘ Police Gazette,’ received “ a most favourable recommendation ” from the Public Petitions (M to Z) Committee. In its report to the House it recommended that a record be made in the ‘ Police Journal ’ and the police files exculpating petitioner in accordance with the findings of_ the Royal Commission, and that additional compensation -be paid him by the Government. The committee added an expression of disapproval of the practice of the Crown Law Office in stipulating that the recipient of compensation or relief must waive all claim to further action.
