CUBA AND JAMAICA SWEPT LOSS OF LIFE AND MUCH DAMAGE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright KINGSTON (Jamaica), Sept. 27. Gales up to 50 miles an hour, which are feared to bo forerunners of a hurricane, swept Jamaica, uprooting banana trees to an estimated total of 2,000/600, which is 35 per cent of the colony’s crop. NEW YORK, September 28. The eastern coast of Florida to-day waited tensely for the tropical hurricane which was reported to be sweeping northward, after having caused considerable loss of life and damage to property at Cuba and Jamaica. Early this evening, however, the weather bureau reports indicated that the hurricane had moved slightly eastward. The, full force will probably miss the Miami coastal points northward, although a storm warning has been sent out for the guidance of shipping. According to reports from Havana an area of 150 to 200 miles wide across the island was swept by the hurricane. Thirty are reported killed at Cienfuegos, in the Santa Clara province, and over 1,000 homes destroyed and other property damaged. FLORIDA ESCAPES MIAMI, September 29. All hurricane warnings Have been hauled down along Florida’s east coast, as the tropical disturbance, which is reported to Have taken 27 lives in Cuba and Jamaica, passed off Miami into the Atlantic Ocean. The Jacksonville Weather Bureau describes the disturbance as greatly diminished, but. still dangerous for some time to come as it traverses the sea.
