WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
SOUTH ISLAND TITLES I. COUGUIAN'S DOUBLE Honours were easy in the South Island amateur wrestling championships which were held at Christchurch last night as a preliminary to the professional contest, Canterbury winning three titles and Otago three. L. J. Goughian, the New Zealand amateur middleweight champion, was successful in winning both the hght-heavy-weight and heavy-weight championships, repeating the success he had at the Otago championships. Otago s other winner was H. Wilson, the clever middle-weight. The greatest surprise from Otago s viewpoint was the defeat of G. Terry in the welter-weight class, Terry being a South Island, winner last year. The winners of South Island chanipionships meet the North Island winners at Wellington in matches for the New Zealand championships. Results:— —Feather-weight.— J. F. Genet (Christchurch) Bst 101 b heat L. Small (Dunedin) Bst 31b by one fall. , _ ' —Light-weight.— J. F. Genet (Christchurch) Bst 101 b beat T. E. H. Walker (Dunedin) 9st 71b on points. —Welter-weight;— Y. L. Thomas (Christchurch) IQst 41b beat G. Terry (Dunedin) lOst 31b by two falls. —Middle-weight.— H. Wilson (Dunedin) list beat F. E. Pone (Christchurch) list 61b by two falls. • " Light heavy-weight.— L. J. Goughian (Dunedin) 12st 21b beat D. M'Laren (Christchurch) list 131 b on points. —Heavy-weight.— L. JT. Goughian (Dunedin) 12st 21b beat W. Vivian (Christchurch) 13st 121 b by .two falls. Referee, Mr J. S. Shaw.
The amateur trophies were presented by Mr P. R. Climie, president of the Canterbury Wrestling Association.
