CABLE-COLBERT COMBINATION
• IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT' FOR OCTAGON It was evidently to be expected that ‘ It Happened Ono Night,’ which returns to the Octagon to-morrow, would rank high among the year’s best. That it has surpassed even the most ambitious estimates is a tribute to the fine acting of the two leading players (Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert) and the elaborate production afforded it by the Columbia Studios. The screen story tells of an heiress, Ellen Andrews, who has married a worthless playboy against her father’s wishes. Her father kidnaps her and holds her prisoner aboard his yacht in Florida until he can get the marriage annulled. Ellen escapes and tries to get north to join her husband. It is on the trip that she meets Peter Warne (Gable), who recognises her as the missing heiress. Although there is a sizeable reward for information about her, he protects her fro.m detectives and others intent on the reward, and sees her through, even after they lose their money and are forced to “ hitchhike ” along tho highway, sleep in straw stacks, and subsist on raw carrots. ‘ Social Register,’ which will also be screened, is a cleverly written and intelligent satire on Park Avenue pomp. This new comedy-drama gives, one a peep into tho home of a fabulously wealthy social light, wherein a high-spirited chorus girl (Colleen Moore) has become firmly csconced thfough tho affections of the young son of the house. The Broadway belle immediately proceeds to call Park Avenue’s bluff—and the result is hilarious, rib-tickling screen fun.
