CHURCH’S CALL TO MEND SOCIAL DISTRESS
ANOTHER AUCKLAND MEETING GOVERNMENT URGED TO ACT [Pek United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, September 24. Another meeting organised by a group of Auckland clergymen was held in the Town Hall to-night to protest against the unemployment position. Monsignor H. F. Holbrook presided, and the speakers included the Her. TV. TV. Averill. The following resolutions were carried:— “ That this representative meeting of citizens of .lackland is of the opinion that the tragic failure to discover a practical solution to the conditions of acute distress which have existed in this favoured country during the past five years shows conclusively that an effective remedy is to lie sought only in a courageous and far-reaching policy by the Government.” “ That this meeting hereby urges the Government to take immediate steps to provide an adequate remedy and to restore to the unemployed a just and equitable standard of living that would provide the essentials of a decent civilised home life with the means to enjoy its lawful rights and to discharge its necessary obligations.” _ “That this meeting affirms its conviction that our faith in God renders is impossible to believe that the present economic situation is in accordance with His will, or that it is impossible for it to be so altered as to enable His people to make a wiser, juster, and more effective use of the increasing productivity of the country.”
